What the browser changes—and what it leaves alone
Format conversion solves a different problem from resizing. It keeps the original dimensions while changing encoding and, for lossy formats, compression. This is useful when artwork is already the right shape and size but the destination player does not support its current format.
JPEG cannot store transparent pixels, so the converter composites transparent PNG or WebP artwork onto the selected background. PNG is lossless but can be much larger; WebP is useful for websites but is less predictable as embedded audio artwork.
